Hi Andrea,
I totally understand your frustration with the medical/pharmaceutical scene. My husband, Mike, has been a clusterhead for 20+ years and we've also evolved to go the no-meds route - nothing medicinal has ever helped him.
Your hubby might be a good candidate for the water treatment - it saved us and Mike was med free when he tried it (I think that's partly the reason for success).
Mike has also found relief from using ice bags (those gel filled thingys that never really freeze but are very cold). He lays one on the back of his neck, wrapped in a cloth gift bag because it's too cold to apply directly to the skin. I'm a migraine sufferer and I use them too - the cold really does help mask the pain.
He also uses dramamine/gravol to sleep through the night without an attack.
AND the good old oxygen has also been a Godsend for us. Mike just uses welders' oxygen because here in Canada, we have a difficult time getting a prescription for medicinal o2 unless we have respiratory probs. Plus, we've pretty much given up on doctors so it was just easier to go to the welders supply to get O2.
Best of luck to you both, Andrea, and if you ever need a fellow supporter's shoulder, feel free to email me. I totally understand the pain of watching your loved one go through this and not being able to do a damn thing about it!
Hugs
Margi
