It can take 2 weeks for verapamil to start working. It's one of the most effective prophylactics in our arsenal so I'd suggest that he goes back on it. Even if it was the cause of those two headaches, which I seriously doubt, odds are that the long term payoff, which would occur in the short term, are going to be worth a couple of heavier attacks.
