Jim,
My husband is a chronic 12 year sufferer. Here's how he explains them. "Imagine that every day of your life, at least once, sometimes 5 or 6 times a day, there's a guy who finds you and beats you in the head with a hammer non-stop for about 45 minutes. He just keeps smacking you over and over with that hammer until you pray you'll die, but you never do. When it's over, he leaves. There's no bruises on you and no blood, so no one else can tell, and you don't have any pain after he's gone. But you know he's coming back. You just don't know when. So you're constantly afraid. You've gone for help, he's invincible, no one has been able to stop him. He finds you no matter where you go. You can't run or hide from him. And you just keep trying different things to protect yourself from him. Most of them never work, but you try to hang on to the hope that one day he will stop, or you'll figure out a way to beat him." That's how he explains it. It sure made me think of them differently when he explained it that way.
