Seriously, although it's been awhile since I've been bothered, I'd describe "shadows" as a fairly low-level pita that sits in your head and lets you know that soon the mother of all pain may be on the way. Sometimes it isn't, and that's another "fun" part of this thing. Mine weren't all that severe but they weren't fun either. It never had any visual effect on me nor was it otherwise debilitating.
This probably doesn't answer much. I could usually fight off low-level stuff with biofeedback.
