My "shadows" are a dull-sharp episodic pain in the "epicenter" of the cluster. I have them before and (very badly) after an attack. They interfere with my ability to read or watch movies, so I guess there is a visual sensitivity occurring. It can be very hard to deal with because 02 or abortive drugs can't be used (e.g., 02 doesn't help & I have to spare my Maxalt for a true attack). Dr.'s -- even the best headache docs -- pooh-pooh them, when they are terribly disruptive. The shadows start for 1-3 weeks before I go into a full-blown episode, which builds in crescendo, with the shadows getting worse, then fading out. Sometimes I say "OK demon, just come on & get it over with," but when it comes on I feel desperate to have the shadow back. It's nuts.
