The freezer breathing makes sense to me. One way, which isn't available very often, that I can often abort a headache is to go outside when it's calm but well below zero and walk hard for a couple blocks or so without a coat. The headache and walking can block the cold for quite awhile (plus cold doesn't seem to bother me much). This has driven some headaches away VERY quickly.
