Divalproex sodium as prophylactic treatment of CH. Seymour Diamond, M.D., et al.

Treatment study involving both chronic and episodic CH.

Ten of 15 males with chronic cluster had a 50 percent or greater response and 5 of 6 females also improved. All three men with episodic CH improved and the two females had a partial response. The mean degree of improvement was 54% for chronic CH and 59% for episodic. Episodic cluster was treated for 2 weeks past-remission. Patients wold then have dose reduction in decrements based on dose at the time of the remission. For episodic CH the mean dose of divalproex sodium was 850mg, and the mean dose for Chronic CH was 826mg. the mean dose for patients experiencing a complete response for chronic CH was 719mg, and for episodic CH it was 750mg. "Conclusion: Divalproex sodium is a singularly useful agent fot eh prophylactic treatment of chronic cluster headache, with good tolerability. It may also be beneficial in patients with episodic cluster headache."
