You did all you could. I have had CH for 30+ years and it is only the past few years that I have found a tremendous degree of relief.
Ice pack, Anacin extra strength (500mg WITH caffine)
help lessen the pain. Oxygen helps, put not rapidly.
What I found is the possibility CH is somewhat related to Trigeminal Neuralgia. Does your husband sleep on the affected side? If so, watch him at night and make sure he puts no pressure on that side. My wife does it for me and I have not been awakened by a CH in 3 years! I also watch touching the left side of my face or aggravating it in any way...so far so good. A few transient CH but not chronic like they used to be.
