If it's been several days, then David is in a coma. One reason (though unlikely) could be a reaction to anesthesia. More likely is lack of oxygen to the brain, in medspeak called "anoxia".
My wife was in a coma for six weeks following an auto accident in 1996. She has mostly recovered, but not completely; so I've become an expert on the subject.
