You did the right thing by deleting the email and attachment. This was actually a Program Information File (PIF) and there are several virus that are using this method. According to Symantec, they show a JIMMI_HENDRIX.MP3.PIF virus. The safest way to avoid these things is just NEVER open an attachment you are NOT expecting.
