Remember that you don't have to take a full on trip to achieve remission. At the required level the worst that can happen is mild anxiety. I drink a few beers beforehand to avoid that.
Taking LSD or shrooms too often may make things worse, so I only recommend once or twice a year to extend the remission.
I know where you are coming from regards recreational use, I grew out of it as well. I can't even face a joint any more, even my drinking isn't what it used to be (luckily).
