I think, at first glance, they are not telling the whole story. In the "why was it banned" chapter they mention that the FDA also banned L-tryptophan. They make it sound like a harmless sleep aid. In fact there were a number of deaths attributed to l-typtophan. It was eventually tied to some sort of contamination found in l-tryptophan made by the largest manufacturer (I think they are in Japan).
Just my first take on the article.
