Depakote is the only preventative that ever helped me. It cut the frequency of headaches and the amount of lighter pain between headaches. At high doses (1500 mg) I had side-effects like tiredness, difficulty concentrating, and gaining weight. I had to get a lot of blood tests because in rare cases depakote can cause liver failure.
Migranal might have helped some, but not very much.
