I was diagnosed with cluster headaches last Friday and just found this site today. While I'm definitely not the best one to be taking advice from, I will tell you that my neurologist presrcibed almost the exact same meds for me. Prednisone on a decreasing dosage, Calan, and Maxalt. The Prednisone did not take away my pain, the Calan gave me headaches, and the Maxalt was ineffective. He then moved onto Sansert, which I was allergic to. Then came the Darvoset, which did nothing, and finally the Demorol which knocked me out. I trust my neurologist despite all this. I have been working with him since I was 10 years old for my migraines and I do believe that he is trying everything he can to help me. He has promised me that he will not rest until I am pain free. Unfortunately, it seems that there is no set cure for these headaches and trial and error on an individual basis based on clinical research is the only way they have to help us. Keep trying different things until you find what works. I will do the same. Good luck.
