I had to reformat my hard rive a few weeks back. I spent a full day and lots of hours on the phone with the Dell technicians rebuilding my pooter.
Re-formatting wipes your hard disc clean. You have to re-install all of your software and drivers for the various devices in your pooter. It's not fun and you better have a backup of your files.
The only good thing was that I gained back 1.5GB from not loading some of the junk software that came with the pooter (stuff like MS Works and the many photo editors that seem to come with everything you buy).
