I had a similar problem and it was becoming somewhat persistent. I went to an opthalmologist(don't exactly remember the exact english word) who diagnosed a convergence problem. The muscles regulating the ability to synchronise the eyes on an object had to be reeducated to regain strenght. Repeated attacks and pain can weaken muscles, particularly on the affected side and the weaker eye can become lazy.
To regain convergence you must exercise by looking at a pen and bringing it as close to your nose as possible and still see only one pen. You must look at the tip of the pen at eyebrow level and not lower. You must do this often during the day. Once you can touch your nose with the pen and still see only one, you should be ok, your convergence ability should be back. This will may take a few weeks but it's worth the effort.
