I wonder if you ever had an ice cream headache.
I can get one by holding cold water in my mouth and tilting my head back. Instant agony - not CH, but close in intensity. That's why I use heat to abort a headache.
It just seems the natural thing to do in my case. If I hold the hot water (or coffee) over the area where cold is such a killer for me, I get some relief from the pain.
