For me, the first line of defense from my neurologist was a tapered dose of prednisone (starting at 70mg), coupled with verapamil(240). I had real slammers, and those drugs stopped the pain almost immediately. They don't work for everyone, but then nothing does.
Good luck, and hope whetever you take just kicks those things right out of your head.
