Ultram for my 'medication holidays'?

Can Ultram be used to alleviate opiate withdrawals? I have been taking Vicodon for quite some time for severe headaches and go through hell every time I take a drug vacation in order to lower my tolerance.

I'm interested in using Ultram to make these 2 day vacations more bearable and would appreciate any help or insights before I talk to my doc. I'm aware of the sudden withdrawals after injesting a substantial quantity of opiods, but unsure of the effects after 24hours has passed since the last Vic pill.
