You're getting some good advice here, and I really do urge you to get your son to a neuro who is familiar with CH as soon as possible.
My husband is a sufferer too, and although I've not seen him pass out from an attack, I have heard of some people doing that. Paco is probably right about the adrenalin surging and ebbing and causing him to "amp out" like that.
You might want to try Dramamine or Gravol for him before bed. It's an over the counter motion sickness drug that causes sleep as a side effect but doesn't let him get into the REM phase of sleep which is when most attacks occur. When my husband gets hit in the night like that, the o2 won't help him either, because the attack is already in full swing by the time he awakes.
Are you using ice for him, while he's under attack? Sometimes laying a bag of frozen peas (or better yet, one of those gel-filled ice bags that never really freeze solide) directly on where his pain is will help my husband. It kinda numbs the pain sensors enough for him to regain a little strength.
I am so so sorry the Cluster Beast has found your family, Norris. I'm glad you found us, though. You'll get the best advice on clusters right here.
Please stick around and keep us posted on how you're all doing.
Best of luck,
Margi
