I have had both over the years. Lumbar in '87 & '88, and cervical in Nov. '00. I still have pain in the back when I over do it a bit and I still have the numbness in my arm and hand after the cervical surgery from time to time. I would still do it again if I had the pain.
One thing I would do is make sure the surgery is done by a Neuro with little bitty hands. I think docs with small hands are better at working around nerves than the ones with big "meat hooks". I would NOT let an "bone and joint"(Ortho) guy do the surgery.
