Forty years ago today my brother was born a healthy, ugly mother fucker. Probably looked like one of those hybrids of a baseball mit and a prune as we all did in our first days breathing by ourselves. I remember as kids we used to put on ad-libbed plays for our next-door neighbor and they would applaud at the end, probably rolling their eyes and counting the minutes until we'd bow and walk off "stage," all the while.
I remember when I was in 6th grade smoking a bong with him because our parents were going to be out for a while and we didn't have to worry. As I was taking the last hit off it we heard a car drive up. Correctly assuming it was out parents we Lysoled that place pretty damn good. We then went down to the kitchen and ate all the stinky food we could find: Pickled herring, limburger cheese, raw onions, etc. I looked at him and breathed in his face and asked if the pot smell was gone. "No. Smoke this" he said as he handed me a Marlboro.
"They'll smell cigarettes on my breath," I replied.
"They'll smell cigarettes or pot. You choose what you want them to smell."
He taught me a lot that day. My parents never noticed smelling either when they walked in. Or at least never mentioned it.
Forty years ago today my brother was born a healthy, ugly mother fucker. Six years and a couple of months ago I sat with him over night and anytime I heard him moan I hit the bolis button cranking morphine into his system. Before that I made my peace with him about everything that ever went down with us. The next morning I kissed his lips and sucked in his last few breaths and whispered to him that my breathing him in was me taking his soul into me. I told him he'd live in me now.
