There usually isn't any tearing, but his eyes do get
bloodshot, and he does ocassionally get a sinus drain-
age, but we had always attributed that to allergies,
since he takes Claritin daily, and works outdoors.
The doctor has tried Imitrex, but that made the head-
ache worse, and caused nausea. Elavil was the latest
attempt, but all it did was help him sleep. It did
nothing to stop the onset of the attacks.
He describes the pain as being hit in the back of the
head by an icepick, and how he acts depends on the
severity of the pain, how many he has, and how long they last. The mildest cause him to close his eyes
until it passes, which could be seconds, and have only
a slight headache afterwards. The worst case senario,
he beats his head on whatever is near, moans, has muscle spasms that almost mimic a seizure, and leave him a post ictal type state. He has been so confused
as to not know his own address. There have been times
when this has happened to him while he is aleep, and
the jerking and moaning have awakened me. The worst
was followed by a breif apneic period that opening his
airway and initiating oxygen relieved. He awoke with
no memory of the event.
