My wife has often asked the same thing.
Like Jonny, I often do not want anyone around, not even in the same room and surely not hovering over me.
There are things you can do:
Keep crushed ice packs, several, at the ready and replace them as needed, with no comments
Have her meds easy to get to--sometimes she'll want to get them herself, other times will ask you.
take nothing said personally--she's fighting something fierce
be ready for her to rest after it is over
Different people have different needs, desires, like Jonny said, ask her sometime.
