Tried antihistamines (like Benadryl) a few years ago. Maybe it did something while it was working, but when it wore off, I would always get hit really bad, so bad that I stopped taking it. Don't know about the new non-drowsy stuff, maybe it's better, but with the usual OTC stuff there's a rebound effect which can cause the body to overproduce histamine when it wears off. This may be why I had a bad experience with it, don't know for sure. It's just something to look out for.
