I've been to Kiev last fall.
The custom officers are picky, but they do not open everyone's suitcase.
If you declare everything you're supposed to, like computer, money, jewelry, etc they don't bug you too much.
Actually, from what I could see, they check more on locals coming back or people from the CIS coming in, not so much on foreigners (I mean Westerners).
I even thought the checking was tougher for leaving than for arriving!
The letter from your doc might be a good idea (just in case) eventhough I'm not sure they do speak that much English anyway ;-)
