Don't ever let someone make multiple attempts to perform a painful, invasive procedure like LP, venipuncture, etc. Two or three tries is more than enough. After two failures, just smile and ask them if they would mind letting someone else try since they seem to be having a bad day. They should get the hint. Sounds like you got stuck with a first year resident. As a patient, you always have the right to refuse treatment by a particular practitioner.
