My wife had one after an auto accident in 11/96. She had it for 4 months, then they removed it. She refers to the scar as her "second belly button".
I don't think the surgery itself is a very big deal; but afterward you need to make sure it doesn't get infected, that it doesn't leak or get pulled out, and that Adam gets adequate nutrition.
I'll send positive thought Adam's way too.
