I disagree with you saying it to him. I think it was poor timing, and poor taste to do so. I think when you don't know the state of mind a person is in when they are reaching out for help, or understanding, saying such can be the last little push it takes to put them over the edge.
I tell you what...if you had said that to me the last time i was considering it, that would have felt like a slap in the face.
