Oxycontin is a time-release opiate meant for cancer patients and other chronic pain sufferers. It has become a real abuse problem in many rural and suburban areas.
Abusers crush the stuff to break open the time-release capsules for a quick rush, apparently much like heroin.
If you use the stuff legitimately, be very careful not to let anyone know you have it -- many people have been robbed, mugged or worse by junkies and dealers trying to get their hands on it. The black-market value is very high.
Now doctors and pharmacists are becoming very leery of prescribing or carrying it due to the high abuse and crime potential.
Unfortunately, this makes it hard for terminal cancer patients and others who really need the stuff.
