Hi Carla, yes, we've got folks here who have both migraines and clusters.
As Shelly says, YOU'VE seen his symptoms, you're the best judge there - take the cluster quiz on his behalf. Shelly really describes a cluster well in that the pain is stupidly intense but when the attack leaves, the pain is virtually gone for her son. Migraines last a lot longer and the pain isn't as severe, but if he's having migraines he isn't going to want to have ANY lights on, OR noise and he will probably be sick to his stomach. Those sensitivities aren't all that common amongst cluster sufferers. That, and migraine pain doesn't leave suddenly like cluster pain does. It fades down to pain freedom but at a slower rate. A short migraine attack is considered to be 8 hours, ranging up to 48 hours. An 8 hour cluster attack is very rare.
Again, you're the best judge of what your son is experiencing - read everything you can about clusters and migraines to see if you can better represent the symptoms he's going through to your doc.
Best of luck
Margi
