Hoffmann was working with Ergotamine not Ergot per say. Ergotamine had already been discovered back at the turn of the century. My understanding is that he extracted it's nucleus and this was LSD. He then altered the LSD to form Methysergide.
I could be wrong though...
Pinky - does LSA have an Indole ring structure? I can't tell from the EROWID diagram.
