I'm 55 and Depakote did a fair job holding down my seizures, many say it's not as effective for CH. I think it does make one a little clumsy, but not seriously. The other side-effect that I noticed is some slight hair loss. It isn't profound but I noticed it. I no longer take it, as I now take Lamictol.
Almost everyone gains weight with Depakote. I had to eat like a bird to hold it down. I did well, but I took it for less than a year.
I'm sorry for your son's seizures but from what I've read and seen, young children have a very good chance to "outgrow" epilepsy. I hope this is the case.
