Hi Tampa, calcium channel blockers of the so-called verapamil type must NEVER be given along with a beta blocker of any type ! Sure, theoretically one could combine verapamil and a beta blocker to get a proper blood pressure but - as you already suspected - you never can forecast their mixed effect on the cardiac conduction. For this reason a combination of verapamil and a beta blocker is simply absolutely forbidden !As you obviously need verapamil for your CH, why not cancel atenolol and increase the dose of verapamil until it has decreased the blood pressure too ? If this doesn't work then there are a lot of other antihypertensive drugs apart from beta blockers you can take along with verapamil with no or a minimal risk. ATB! Thomas, MD
