with me getting full custody of my kids, the major factor was that my kids wanted to stay with me. They had to go through the divorce hell as well with social workers, court appointed guardians, and independent counselors, but they stuck to their guns. Divorce laws vary widely from state to state. My state always favors the woman which seems unfair to a male and we also have a no fault rule.
It's a bad experience to have a bunch of strangers dig into every aspect of your life and also difficult to maintain some degree of discipline with your kids while the other is trying to buy their love. Heck, I just told my kids to do whatever they wanted to do and will still always love and support them, mine were in the teen years. Hard to say how a younger child would respond. Can only wish you the best, it's a terrible thing to have to go through.
