A proxy server strips your IP address (unique to your Internet connection) and your PC's network card MAC address (unique to your PC) from messages... substitutes it's own IP and MAC address... thus making messages look like they originated there. The "Anonymizer" is one such service.
There are a few reasons people do this (hope I don't offend anybody here) 1) people who are overly paranoid about their privacy, 2) assholes who like to disrupt messageboards, 3) people who trade child pornography on the web.
