Am chronic, been taking Amitrip for seven years now. Take 3/day (30 mg), my neuro said I could take up to 5/day. Oxygen works for me in aborting the bastard, and the amitrip cuts down the number of times I am awakened with an attack. It still happens, but not nearly as often as it occurred before the amitrip. Am guessing that it allows me to sleep through some of the milder ones (is there such a thing?). Good luck to you.
