I am a 10 year sufferer and I've used ice to abort very successfully for the last 5 years or so. I use frozen peas for the conforming factor but I will try your gel packs. Incase you don't like the shaved head approach try wrapping your pack in a damp tea towel (not too thick). The water helps to deliver the cold fast enough to abort the beast. During my cycle I never leave home without my peas in a cooler and my damp towel in a plastic baggie. Putting the ice directly on my temple seems to bring on CH faster so I ice the back of my neck just at the base of the skull on the affected side.
