Hey Jack. You've brought up some good points to ponder. Here is what I have noticed about my own CH pattern and the sleep/REM connection:
- prolonged session of interrupted sleep will bring on a CH cycle
- If I try to go back to sleep in the early morning after a bad CH night I usually end up with another CH.
- During a cycle, if I nap during the day for more than 1/2 hr, I get a CH within 15 minutes of waking - (my thought here is that as long as I don't go into a deep-REM-sleep a CH won't be triggered)

- Even in remission I CRAVE sleep! Do not wake me up unless the house is on fire. Even if the house is on fire don't wake me up unless the firemen can't put out the fire and the roof is caving in and there are angels dancing around my bed fighting off a funny looking guy in a black dressing gown carring a large funny looking curved stick and.....
Yah, I'd say REM /sleep is on my "important" paper list
