Ice is a very popular aid here with a lot of folks. I understand that the application of ice directly to the skin sends "panic" signals to the brain to try to warm that site, thus slightly diverting the pain messages that it is currently dealing with.
My husband uses those gel-filled bags that are sold in the camping supplies section of the hardware store for keeping food cold. They are pliable and can mold to the shape of the face if needed. We keep 3 in the freezer and he rarely needs more than 2 to get through an attack. If the cold is too cold, he puts the ice bag in a cloth gift bag to protect his skin a little.
