Yes, this is a great idea for a lot of people. I think it is the intensity of the cold, and, as you say, the volume of air. Drastic pain needs drastic relief measures.
For those who prefer heat (and some of us do) the same works with the automobile heater. Turn it on "hot" and "upper lever" or "max" or whatever gives the greatest amount of hot air, then lean your head into it. It works very well for me. I am one who cannot tolerate cold, not even thinking the word when an attack strikes me. In fact, the first time I had an attack 17 years ago, my first thought was to apply heat, and inside I use my hair dryer set on the highest heat.
We are all different. Some people benefit from cold alternating with heat. Some like heat, then find cold is better. We have to experiment.
I am very glad you seem to be improving generally. Maybe you will be one of the fortunate ones who does outlive CH. I hope so very much.
