While diltiazem is not my first choice in calcium channel blockers (Verapamil seems to work a bit better...and is better documented in the treatment of headaches), there is nothing wrong with using it for the treatment of clusters/migraines.
It is very similar to verapamil...has less side effects of constipation...but can also increase your heart rate a bit (not generally enough to cause any concern, though).
I don't know what reaction you had to verapamil...if it was allergic, I would be very careful trying another CA channel blocker...but if it was just a minor side effect, I would think diltiazem well worth a try.
