Before I had my first episode, I used to get attacks with runny nose and eye on the left side, but instead of cluster pain, an intense itching. They would last between 15 and 45 minutes, and come in groups of five or six a week, usually in the evenings.
I called it the "itchy eye" and thought at first they were some kind of allergic reaction. Later I had my first experience with an episode of the beast. I never had the itchy eye during an episode, but I probably would have traded.
I think these may have been some kind of precursor to clusters. That's an uninformed guess, but they seem like related phenomena.
Right now, I'm pain free two months, except for one or two mild shadows a day, and now three or four "itchy eye" attacks this past week. I'm taking it as a warning and organizing my resources.
