If sublingual hot sauce works as an abortive for you, try the new Tabasco Habanero. It even has a good taste. Not claiming a connection, but I consume some form of capsaicin almost everyday. Now 34 months PF.

My abortive method is to place about a teaspoon of hot sauce under the tongue at the first twinges, and hold it there--don't swallow unless you must--for about five minutes. The sauce will not burn you if you don't slop it on your lips or the top of your tongue. If you try it, please report your results.

Yep. Go here:
http://www.clusterheadaches.org/library/medications/capsaicin.htm
Then, type in capsaicin in search.
After eating a peck o peppers, one may find relief by sticking clusterhead up one's grotto.

Jonny,  is the treatment you refered to a preventative or an abortive?  Just trying to keep the facts straight.

I have not tried this, and I love hot peppers.  Will any kind of hot sauce work?  How about just putting a hot pepper under your tung?

I still say... Put some habanero sauce in an afrin bottle, and shoot that shit up ya nose... Either it'll work, or it'll certainly distract ya...

Well, I'd guess if you want more pain, you can shoot habanero sauce up your nose, or put a slice of pepper under your tongue. Actually, the capsaicin tests on clusters does use a spray. Boob and I have argued about this. He thinks pain is a part of the blocking process. He is wrong. Putting the capsaicin under the tongue gets it into your system quickly, but does not burn. Some peeps like pain and get addicted to the pepper burn. Like other addicts they must have hotter and hotter stuff. Must be something wrong with their heads.

Here's a start: http://student.biology.arizona.edu/honors98/group12/pepper.html
This, I think is the key sentence: "The capsaicin found in hot peppers work by binding to and stimulating capsaicin receptor proteins found in neuronal cells. The fibers of the neuronal cells then carry the stimulus from areas such as the tongue, to the roots of the spinal cord. Capsaicin also allows a deluge of calcium ions to enter the neuron."
I can see that my long-promised paper on capsaicin and clusters is overdue. I have little scientific brain matter, but will attempt to gather current findings into a coherent mess, as affecting clusters. I love the irony of pain stopping pain. Why else would we bang our noggins through the the drywall?

FYI - I am part of the Clinical Research Trial (see post by Den and/or DJ for more info) for a new drug that is a "pepper based product".  I haven't started it yet, but it is a nasal spray based on hot peppers.  Gives new meaning to OUCH.
