Hi All, This is my first time here and I feel better already knowing that you all understand. It is hard to explain to to others. I have been suffering for about 7 years now, and before I was diagnosed I had no idea what was going on. I have good results with Immitrex and Oxygen. However, given that Immitrex is strong and limited in the amounts to be taken in a 24 hour period, I prefer oxygen, but it is not feasible to carry around an oxygen tank. Lately, I have had good results by sticking my head under the cold water tap in the sink. I soak the entire head first and then focus on my left side (where the pain is) and let it run on my eye if it is a really bad one. If I catch the headache before it sets in fully it tends to work very well, but it may come back. What I try to do is soak the head in the coldest water I can stand and wait until the pain changes from headache to a sting from the coldness in the water. It is a very noticeable change and given the pain of our headaches it is really not bad at all. Hope it may help some of you and good luck over the holidays. RAT

The nickname was given me with no negative connotations and I have been called much worse, so please call me Rat or The Rat if you prefer. I find the Immitrex injections a little too strong and only use them if I wake up with a headache already fully rooted if you know what I mean. But try the cold water with the ones you catch in the early stages. Rat

Imitrex injections are 6 ml, the Trex tip will have you taking 2 ml which aborts CH for many people.
Less drug, less money.

Hi Rat and welcome. Sorry that you've had to seek this place out. Glad that cold water works for you. It seems to help alot of people but for me its hot water. The hotter the better. Stand in the shower until your blood boils hot. But, whatever works, right?

Dr. Wright's Circulatory Technique
This is not transcendental meditation, imagery, relaxation, or anything psychic. It's entirely physical and takes a lot of work and concentration. Give this method a good workout. It’s not a miracle, but it’s been helpful to many.
When I was diagnosed, my neurologist said to treat this as a vascular problem. I was told to concentrate on “redirecting” blood circulation in order to retard flow to the head. This is done by trying to “send” blood into the arms and hands or other extremities. When properly done, your hands will become warm and redder with increased circulation. I also found it easier to concentrate on one hand.
This relieves just slightly, the pressure on the affected vessel, which indirectly causes our pain. We all have this ability but it can be exhausting. I was often able shorten my attacks from about half an hour to no more than a few minutes. Sometimes, when awake, I could entirely abort the attack IF I KEPT AT IT. Often, I would suffer only minor discomfort instead of excruciating pain. Do not stop just because your hands are warm or redder. Keep this up until you are sure it's subsided. If you let up or lose concentration, it’s very hard to restart this process. It may take some time but when this works, the relief is almost immediate.
I learned this from the doctor in a few minutes. He simply told me to try to keep blood away from the head. He thought it easiest to concentrate on the arms and hands but any place that works for you is fine. He said to think of it as "filling your hands" with redirected blood. It’s important to keep at it THROUGH the pain. This will be difficult, but it’s the only way this technique will work. Don’t let up until you are sure the attack has ended.
This will not always work, but I think it will always have at least some effect on the severity and duration of the attacks. It can be useful between medications or while waiting for some other drug to take effect. All it takes is a little practice. It was fairly easy to learn and what I'm writing here is more than I got from the doctor, as I've drawn from my own experience.
When awakened in horrible pain, it’s very hard to focus, but I think it’s always worth a try. This costs nothing but hard work, is harmless, non-invasive, and it gives us a fighting chance.

Just a quick note to newbies.... BobG's list was posted in jest, gang - please don't think that we want you to try all the things listed on there - especially taping bird seed to your ears or sniffing BLEACH!! 
Rat (i'm with Jonny on this one, can't you give us a first name??) you might want to try an ice pack instead of drowning yourself under the tap. You're right in seeking cold for relief, but those gel-filled ice bags do a much better job. So will a bag of frozen corn or peas.
Also, if you are otherwise med-free, you may want to try the water treatment - the Water x3 button on the left - it has had good results for some folks who are otherwised unmedicated. Be sure to take a multi-vitamin along with it though - you don't want to wash out the good stuff!
Hope you find some relief soon.

One thing my hubby likes to try is takin an imatrex tab before bed that way when the rem sleep sets in and he gets hit hes ready... and it lessens the severity... good luck Welcome again... ree
