Well, Riccardo.....from New York, if you don't have transportation, you have trains, planes, and automobiles to Syracuse...not Sicily...Cheesy Syracuse, New York is probably about 400 km or so. Everything will get you to Syracuse which will have some kind of shuttle to Alexandria Bay. It's a popular resort so there should be no real problem. There will be good train service but US trains leave a lot to be desired.

It's harder for me because I live 400 Km or so west, in a small town, which has little of  anything. It’s quiet....too quiet.

How are the headaches Riccardo?  I haven’t heard lately

Charlie,

You bring up a great point that fall foliage is astonishing here.

I picked August more so people with kids in school wouldn't be hindered.  If folks want Sept then we can do that too.  Because I'm booking early, there should be some considerable discounts.  Don't forget most of the resorts in the area only open in May.

October is pretty much the end of the season, so it can go either way.

This is everyone's convention ... if Sept is better I can work on that.  I'm still waiting for the proposals from the resort so I won't know what rates  I'm looking at yet.

As for transportation, Alex Bay itself has most everythign you can want in walking distance.  Shuttle service is not a problem.  LIke I said, I'll do it myself if it comes down to it.

Riccardo, Check with Peppermint and ave.  Ave is flying into JFK as well and Pep was going to look into transportation from NYC to Upstate.  Greyhound buslines come into Watertown.  If you are coming from NYC you want to get to watertown, not syracuse.

Ok...
As far as travel from NYC.. or JFK:
Jet Blue has a very cheap fair... 44.00 plus tax each way to Syracuse.  Travel time is 1 hour.  Its about $100.00 round trip.
They are a no frills airline but modern, comfortable and I've used them several times - plus you can watch TV on the way. ;D
Next - Greyhound buses (Includes Adirondack Trailways and New York Trailways)  to Watertown... $67.00 each way but a 7-10 hr. travel time..yikes!!
From what I'm seeing... I would likely fly to Syracuse and rent a car from there or take the shuttle to the hotel.  Driving 2 hrs after a 1 hr plane ride beats the alternative.
Of course.... coordinating the connections is key.
Websites to look at:   www.greyhound.com (buses) www.amtrak.com (trains) www.jetblue.com (planes)

Feel free to email me if you like.

Thanks so much Pep for looking into the airfares from NYC to Syracuse.

A bus trip would likely be horrendous after an international flight, and there's no train station in watertown so if you took the train you'd have to go to syracuse anyway.

Forgot..... Amtrak train in a regular seat:
148.00 round trip...5 hours travel time.

Flying NY to Syracuse and hopping the shuttle or a rental car looks really good.

I vote for the Fall foliage!

At the first convention we picked the middle of summer because someone complained about not having any way to come during thier kids school.  Ya know what.  It didn't matter.  The person didn't even come.  The rest that did had to swelter through Las Vegas in July.

90-95% of the attendees don't have any childcare problems.  I think you should pick the season that caters to the majority.

This may sound kind of tough but tough!

I'm surprised at you, Bob.  I figured you'd WANT to be there during bikini season.    Especially if it meant seeing Drummer in a Speedo.    I know that's Hub's motivation for attending...

I'm voting for the August date, just to be difficult.  Wink

Well Bob, you certainly don't have to worry about heat in Alex BAy LOL.  We do get warm weather, but August in Alex Bay, right on the water, can be cool.  September can be downright cold.

I've been on a cruise through the islands in July that we all had to wear sweats and jackets to.  Keep in mind that being on the water is always cooler than being inland....specially a desert LOL

Until I get the rates from the hotel I'm not going to change the date.  If the rates in Aug are too high then I will inquire as to Sept rates.

Remember, most folks have vacation time in the summer months, not in september.

Regardless, You can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but never all of the people all of the time.

Hi! The location looks gorgeous- I have a question..about how many people generally attend? Has it grown each year?  Do people bring spouses or come single? Just curious-thanks.

They come single, they come with their spouse, they come with their entire family.

1st year 20+ attendees.
2nd year 30+
last year 40+

I'm betting around 75 at this one.

Hope you all like people. Alexandria Bay in August will be CROWDED.  It's nice but as my relatives reminded me, it's a big tourist trap. Gets the Island crowd, Adirondack crowd and some New York City folk who are tired of Saratoga and New England

Bikinis on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence.....a novelty Undecided . Sorry guys.

I think Charlie wants to have the convention at his house Wink

As it turns out, talk about coinkidink, The Pine Tree Point resort that is my first choice for the convention, called me today to put together the proposal.  Guess what?
She's a  CLUSTERHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She did mention that August is THE biggest month in Alex bay and that she may be able to get us much better rates if we backed it up to the last weekend in July.

I will firm up dates as soon as I have my proposals.

If it means less cost for the resort, then I will definitely be changing to July, I do not want this to be an expensive convention for everyone.

I'm with Bob P and Charlie!  I vote for September, and less crowds.  It is usually still nice weather wise and most people have gone back to work.  It worked great last year.  It could be the very beginning of September, usually easier for people to get holidays too - not as much competition as in the summer months.

The Fall! The Fall! The Fall!

If it's in september it won't interfere with our other holiday plans.

It is still not certain I will be able to come, but I have a chance of a cheap ticket to NYC, and for the rest it will be, save up, girl!
Missing Las Vegas, Atlanta and Vancoeuver was bad enough, but now there's a chance to finally meet Donna, Jackie, Elaine, Margie... I absolutely MUST come.

Anybody know how to get mean old Charlie out of his hobbithole? I wanna meet him too!

As much as I would like to accomadate everyone in the Fall, that may completely out of the question.  Clark is up for a PCS (Permanent Change of Station) and it will be rather difficult for me to host a convention in Alexandria Bay from Colorado.

The dates right now are either Aug 2-3 or July 19th weekend depending on my proposals from the hotel.

The Pine Tree Point Resort that is my first pick is mostly secluded from the crowds.  You can walk down to all the shops and tourist stuff, but it's outon a point by itself.
Here's a pic:

It's set apart from the other resorts and main area of Alex Bay.  Not to mention the amenities right at the resort.
