Update on my situation
« on: Oct 14th, 2004, 10:31am »

I have been to the doctor once more since I last posted.  He doesn't know what the headaches are, but he seems to think my insomnia is what is causing the headaches.  He prescribed me Trazodone about 2 weeks ago and wanted me to try it for 2 weeks.  It never helped me sleep, but I hadn't had a headache from last wednesday until yesterday.  I thought it had helped the headaches but then I got a really bad one yesterday at at work around 2:40.  I thought my eyeball was going to explode out of my head.

My doctor also prescribed me Ambien on Monday after I called and told him the trazodone was not helping me sleep.  I tried the Ambien for the first time last night.  That stuff is crazy.  I took it and was sitting at my computer.  Five minutes after I took it the screen starting having weird colors coming out of it and it looked 3d.  I also had some other weird hallucinations while laying in bed trying to sleep.  There was like a giant yellow head by the door to my room.  I thought it was going to eat me. I wasn't scared though for some reason,  I guess it did help relax me.

I am sort of pissed that my doctor hasn't given me anything for the headaches or referred me to a neurologist.  I'm going to give him a call later today and demand some oxygen and some other drug (forgot the name) that my dad takes for his cluster headaches.  I am also going to demand a referral to a neurologist.

I'm tired of the doctor being a dumbass and just playing a guessing game with me.  This is the 7th week of headaches and he hasn't found anything that helps me yet.  I'd say it's time to move on to a specialist.

It took me asking 3 times for a referral to see a neurologist. I'm not sure if it is ego or what. His nurse (all be it a nice lady and the only one I actually get to talk to when I call) made it sound like it was a waste of time. My doc is calling what I have CH, but only after I came here and found the symptoms and talked with the folk here, then told him what I thought. He then says he talked to a neurologist, and said " ya know it sounds like you have cluster headaches", duh!.
So my friend, you do what YOU need to do to get the answers. Fire you f**kin doc and start over if you need to. Sometimes I get the feelin that they get the feelin of being a bit to divine. There is a God and it ain't them.
Hopin you have a pf day.

The drug that my dad takes that I had forgotten the name of earlier is fiorinal.  I'm going to try to get some of that along with oxygen.  Both work for my dad so hopefully they work for me.

Playing the selfmedicating game is ok to a point. But first you gotta know what you got. There is a whole treatment scenario that deals with prevents AND pain relief.  Try and get to a headache specialist or neuro. If you can't do that print as much usueful info from this site as you need and take it with you to your doc and put it in his hand. Then try come up with a solution to your problem.
The doctor works for you if he isn't willing or able to get you a proper diagnosis then find another one.

To Hell with waiting for a referral. Call a neuro and make an appointment. If they insist on a referral, call another neuro.

Most GPs just don't understand CH or are very uneducated on it. Some think they can treat you as well as a neuro could. This aint' a good thing. Look around and find a neuro on your own if you have to.

See if you can find someone here who is close to you and get the names of some respectable neuros.

Good luck with finding a doc.

BTW: You made the Ambien sound like fun.  Grin

The problem with me just calling a neurologist is that my insurance will only cover it if I have a referral.

The ambien was pretty fun actually.  I freaked out my mom, aunt, and uncle though.  I also don't remember a lot of other things that happened last night.  Like I don't remember actually going upstairs from my room after taking it, but I know I did this because my uncle had to help me back downstairs.  It was somewhat fun, but It didn't really help me sleep much.  I'm still plenty tired today and woke up a few times during the night.

Huh Undecided Kiss Kiss :- Hey you, My heart goes out to you ,  I had written about trazodone last week it works for me and my ch hubby. The reason I suggested it was because it is not addictive like ambiam IS. I dont want to be nosey but  how many mgs  was perscribed.? IM ON AND SO IS THE HUB 175mgs with the opption to split or break it in half, maybe you might need a stronger dose IM not a doctor so thats up to you and he. Just the fact you were having symtoms like what we ENJOYED back in the 70s it was fun then and we new  the trip we were going to take even how to pack.. Im not trying to make light of your situation that would freak me out I never heard of a reaction like that to ambium. I wish you good luck and in my opinion for what its worth dont take it again, I sure wish trazodone worked for you I really stand by that drug and when I see the ch hubby getting sleep well Im sure you know how it makes me feel and I soooooo hope you get some rest soon, Ill shoot prays up for ya my friend god bless hang in I CARE and will always be hear and looking dayly with the hope to hear you got some sleep  luv snook

I was only taking 50mg of trazodone, but even at that small dosage I felt like crap every morning (sort of like a hangover).

I've talked to a couple pharmacists today and found out that 10mg of ambien is the largest dosage.  Normally doctors give out 5mg and sometimes people even have to cut those in half.  My doctor prescribed me the 10 mg, which is definately too much for me, being that I'm rather lightweight.  I'll probably try to use it again, but I'll cut it in half or a fourth.

From my experience, the fiorinal did nothing for my CH at all. It did help with the neck pain I had from thrashing around but that is it.

You've been going a long time without anything right? hang in there and see if you can get some other types of meds.

I was thinking of requesting Imitrex, but my mom doesn't think I should try that.  There is a history of heart problems on both sides of my family.  I did some reading on fiorinal, and I guess it's basically in the same class of drug as Maxalt (Rizatriptan), and I have tried that to no avail.

Where did you get your info??
Fiorinal has Butalbitol, aspirine ,and caffiene....

http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/fio1176.htm

Not being arguementative but it is not at all related to maxalt or any other triptan.

And if mom is worried about use of Imitrex because of heart then she would be worried about Maxalt as well.

Just trying to help ya.

I am going throught that all now, John don't even waste your time or money if the neuro it not a HEADACHE SPECIALIST, I finally after the GP,OB, and Allergy DR's got into a Neuro who was as dumb as a rock about CH. I will be seeing a new in NOV. I have been having to treat myself with learning all I can and bugging the crap out of my GP to give me the meds I need just til I see the new Neuro. I am on verapamil and I just started myself on the Melatonin at night( It's the best and won't hurt you) I take 9mg. 1/2 reg and 1/2 time-released. Really helps, just check out the site in MEDS and you will see everyone talking about Melatonin. IT's a heaven sent for alot of us.

Perhaps I read the thing wrong about Fiorinal.  It is just a pain reliever rather than an abortive, am I correct?

My mom was worried about Maxalt and gave me a good lecture for trying it.   I think i'll give Fiorinal a try of the Dr. will prescribe it, but I mainly would like to try O2.  The nurse sure is taking her time calling me back.  Normally she calls within an hour of my message, but it's been almost 4 hours now.

Well I got pissed that the doctor wasn't giving me a referral so I called up my insurance company, and it turns out that I do not need a referral to have them pay for a visit to a neurologist.  I think i'm going to try to get an appointment with a neurologist in the Des Moines, IA or Kansas City area next week.

My doctor still hasn't given me any O2, even though he himself, had said that it wouldn't do any harm.  He did, however, give me a prescription for some midrin, which I picked up today.  It's basically just high powered tylenol.  Hopefully it works, though I know that taking 3 tylenols together hasn't helped.
