Done it. It's wonderful know you've helped so many people. Extra benefit: you can donate whole blood within days after a plasma donation (as long as it's still the requisite 8 weeks after the last whole blood donation).

Drink lots of water, and bring something to read where it's easy to turn the pages (they did both arms on me, so couldn't turn the pages well).

Good luck, Mel!

I've done it many, many times.  If needles don't bother you, it's a breeze.

At the Stanford Blood Center you get your own tv & vcr and get to pick out a movie to watch since it takes about 2 hours.

You don't have same lightheadedness as with giving whole blood because you get your red blood cells back in your other arm.  It's definitely a worthwhile experience to help people who need platelets & white blood cells.

I donated Plasma once.

I don't remember a lot about the whole process because I passed out (the needles the sight of my own blood, etc.) and they had to use smelling salts to revive me...HA HA HA HA!!!!  I'm a wimp!

I am sure Hirvimaki could come up the the correct words to describe my phobias...LOL Smiley

I still think it is a good idea, if you can tolerate the needles and blood thing....

Thanks everyone for your imput.  I'm going to call the center tomorrow and schedule an appt. to donate.  I'm fine with needles and blood and all, just wasn't sure what to expect.  I read up on what the process is, and although it takes some time, i'm up to doing it!

When I was in college, we'd do this for drinking money.

We'd go buy the hooch right after we got done donating so we were cheap dates.

Donna,

Perhaps nosocomephobia (fear of hospitals), hematophobia (fear of blood), iatrophobia (fear of doctors), and aichmophobia (fear of needles) are the terms for which you are searching. Aichmophobia is one of my biggest fears, and a very odd one when you consider I have 14 piercings!

Wow.

I never knew I had so many phobias.

Is there a doctor....no wait I'm afraid of those...where is the closest hosp....no can't do that either....anyone got any Trex..........nope, no needles....damn.

Oh well.  But I can say this Hirv...I do not suffer from sarmassaphobia...a fact my husband can attest to at least twice daily!

I do think however that I am also suffering from smartassaphobia...what do you think?

In that case you'd be afraid of me, and that would make me cry.

Thankfully you do not suffer from sophophobia.  Next lesson at nine o'clock!
