It's one disgusting, high-fat, alcoholic beverage!!!!

just my opinion, I know LOTS of people love the stuff...

12 egg yolks
1 lb. confectioner's sugar
2 c. dark rum, brandy, bourbon, or rye
2 to 4 cups of liquor
2 quarts whipping cream
1 cup peach brandy, if desired
8 to 12 egg whites

that makes a gallon of it.  (better be near a bathroom...)

http://www.indepthinfo.com/eggnog/history.shtml

Merry CHristmas everybody!!!!!

What is liquor and do you whisk the egg whites or what? can't you just chuck the eggs in in one go?

Limey, probably the best comparison is to think of it as a liquid custard that is spiked with alcohol.  Usually rum or spiced rum.

Personally I find it disgusting, I prefer my custard in a trifle.

The liquor is usually rum.
I've never made it from scratch. It is one high caloric drink. You don't drink it to get drunk b/c its so thick and rich. I like nutmeg sprinkled on the top of mine. It's a great sipping drink while sitting in front of the fireplace, or while decorating or just socializing. Definitely NOT a 'Let's get drunk' drink.

Cat thank you! I agree about custard.. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without a dirty great bowl of trifle!
Tom thank you ( and not just for your comment on this post Smiley ) I love nutmeg so that idea alone is enough to make me want to try it. I like "lazy" drinks (sometimes!) and I'm very fond of Baileys, have you tried that? Is it a similar consistency?

Much much thicker than Baileys.

Man... now I am thirsty for Nog.

I have never made it from scratch either, preferring the 'just add Captain Morgans and a bit more nutmeg' variety.

Don't why you're thanking me.  Huh But I'll take it.
A lazy drink it is.

Love me some Baileys. I drink that on the rocks very frequently. And Rock is right---thicker than Baileys. Egg Nog is sorta an acquired taste.

Basic Non-alcoholic Eggnog
12 eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 quart cream
to taste vanilla
dash of nutmeg

Seperate eggs at room temp. Beat yolks till creamed with about half of sugar, whites till peaked then add other half of sugar. Beat cream till stiff. Then fold all together. Add vanilla to taste - but remember that a little bit of vanilla goes a long way.

Place into containers keep in refrigerator for at least one day. Shake before serving
i bought mine at the store
enjoy your egg nog

I like eggnog. Once a year is enough for me though.

The other Christmas holiday drink that comes to mind is Tom and Jerry's. They usually have a special on them one night a year, it's like $.50. There is not a lot  of people that like Tom and Jerry's, it's an aquired taste.

The last time I drank Tom and Jerry's it was about -20F. In a couple of hours I drank about a dozen of them and chased them with 8-10 Budweisers. I didn't need my coat when I left.

Grin Jonny's eggnog is my favorite, but this is good, too:

8 large eggs, 2 separated
3/4 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups heavy cream
2 cups whole milk
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, plus more for garnish
3/4 cup bourbon
1/4 cup brandy

Combine the 6 whole eggs, 2 egg yolks, sugar, and salt in a medium mixing bowl and whisk together. Heat 2 cups heavy cream with the milk in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. When the cream and milk are hot, ladle about 1 cup into the egg mixture and whisk to incorporate. Pour the egg-milk mixture into the hot cream mixture, and continue to cook, stirring continuously, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the stove and strain the custard immediately through a fine-mesh sieve. Allow the custard to cool for 10 minutes before proceeding.
Add the vanilla, nutmeg, bourbon, and brandy to the eggnog and stir well to incorporate. Beat the 2 egg whites to soft peaks in a clean mixing bowl and fold them into the custard base. In a separate bowl, beat the remaining 1/2 cup cream to soft peaks, and fold it into the eggnog as well. Serve warm or cover and refrigerate until chilled, about 1 hour.
Pour into a decorative bowl or pitcher and garnish with nutmeg. Serve in small punch cups or old-fashioned glasses.
