Sean, even I found that helpful. Thanks for letting us know how a neuro effectively dealt with an insurance co!

My nuero wrote the carrier a letter stating my condition and the effects. Emphasised that I was under his care and that for them to reject additional quantities could result in ER visits 6 to 8 times daily for pain relief. In his opinion the Imitrex was the lesser of two evils. The insurance carrier wrote back to my nuero stating that they have given him permission for unlimited Imitrex doses as long as I am under his care and thanked him for the advise. |
| That's a good one to know. I got a doubling of the allowable trex shots through a neuro - but unlimited - Now that's an accomplishment!

Ultimately the ER visit is going to accomplish what you were looking for in the first place.................more trex, and I think the realization of that is what helped with thier decision. Unfortunately it probably had nothing to do with my health, it was surely about money. I hope that it works for you guys too. Its a scarey thought to be without your trex isn't it. I know it is for me Sean..............................

Gee Donna, I really wish I could help you. My prescription plan is controlled by my employer (re-insurance). That means you can write Blue Cross all you want, but my employer still prohibits coverage of imitrex injections. You'd have to lobby my employer (and that's not likely to work). --- Steve

What state do you live in: Minnesota Do you have health insurance? Yes Who is your current insurance Carrier: BCBS of North Dakota What CH meds do you take: Imitrex injections, verapamil, Depakote, pred, nuerontin, stadol. How many are you "allowed" per month: It's been two years, I think it was two scripts for six statdose kits a month, a total of 24 shots. Every time I see a medical person I ask for samples and if BCBS complains my pharmacist does the billing game with them. I still only get enough trex to barely get by. Have you ever been able to get your insurance carrier to allow more? If so, how? I never tried, see above.

I live in New York State and have Community Blue ins. I get mine through the local Chamber of Commerce. So far it's been pretty good. Not cheap though. I never had trouble with drugs as the only one I ever took was Inderal which is also a beta-blocker. I suppose if I told them what I was using it for, I may have had trouble but I can't say. Charlie

What state do you live in: Wisconsin Do you have health insurance? yes Who is your current insurance Carrier: Employers Health (Humana) What CH meds do you take: Depakote, Imitrex How many are you "allowed" per month: Whatever amount my Neuro writes the script for. Have you ever been able to get your insurance carrier to allow more? If so, how? Didn't need to. As long as I don't fill the script twice on the same day, I can refill when I need to. I am very fortunate. My Neuro writes the script for something like, 12 NS's and 6 injections X 8 refills, and I don't have to worry about being denied by the ins. co. (as long as we do the 20% co-pay for each refill, which amounts to $181.00 per fill) or the pharmacy questioning anything. mel

Indiana Unicare Zomig 2.5 or 5 mg pills for $20.00 (cash) you can get 6 a month. so get the 5mg, cut them in half and have 12 doses. Supposed to only use 2 doses a week....hahahahahahahaha could be why I left my head at home.... Can't get more, but might get samples if your neuro doesn't have a family memeber who suffers from migraines or othr headaches.... hahahahahahaha GL.

What state do you live in: WI Do you have health insurance? YES Who is your current insurance Carrier: Group Health Cooperative(GHC) a nonprofit HMO What CH meds do you take: Imitrix duragesic patch How many are you "allowed" per month: Most different insurance HMO's that I have been with have limited me to 6 per month. My current one included. The good news is I don't get any ch while on the duragesic patch. The dr gives me 10 a month/1 every 3 days to change. It definetly keeps the beast at bay. Have you ever been able to get your insurance carrier to allow more? If so, how? My dr documented all the preventatives i had tried that had failed and abortives I had tried and failed and explained that I needed imitrix several times a day for multiple different headaches and unlimited access to it. I got all the imirix I could ever dream of getting hit 8x a day. I had full coverage. It was when I went to the ha/pain specialist a year latter and he pointed out that taking that much imitrix is not good for the body and perscribed duragesic patch. It gave me my quality of life back and stopped the ha.
